Snowmobiling in Michigan: How to Ride and Avoid an Accident

Before you can rev your engine, what certifications do you need to ride a snowmobile in Michigan?

First, you’re going to need a certificate of registration, which the Michigan statute lays out very clearly:

A snowmobile may not be operated unless the owner first obtains a certificate of registration and a registration decal. The certificate of registration must be secured at the time of purchase or transfer of ownership.

A certificate of registration or a registration decal is not required for a snowmobile operated exclusively on lands owned or under the control of the snowmobile owner or for a snowmobile used entirely in an authorized safety education and training program conducted by a certified snowmobile safety instructor.

Did you get that? You don’t need a certificate of registration to ride a snowmobile on your own property in Michigan.

In addition to a snowmobile certificate of registration, you also want to purchase a Michigan snowmobile trail permit sticker, which allows you to ride your snowmobile on frozen public waterways.

Both permits should be affixed to your snowmobile.

Now all you need is the snowmobile and some safety tips…

You’re out there riding and having a good time, but what should you do to avoid a Michigan snowmobile accident?

• Make sure your machine is in tiptop shape: check your oil, have a full tank of gasoline, replace your blades as needed
• Wear the right gear: insulated boots, a helmet, gloves, and eye protections
• Never ride alone
• Never ride in single file when going across frozen waterways
• Keep your headlights on at all times
• Always check the weather before you begin your journey
