Former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers Suing Over Cut Hand at McDonald’s
Former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers is suing the owners of a McDonald’s franchise over an injury she sustained while visiting their location at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
On the afternoon of January 1, 2015, Monica Conyers was at Detroit Metropolitan Airport to catch a flight to Washington D.C., where she planned to watch her husband, U.S. Representative John Conyers (D-13th District), be sworn into office. Before her flight, she stopped at a McDonald’s restaurant in the airport for a quick meal. After she got her food, she was seated at a table when she reached under the side of her chair to move it closer to the table. But when she reached under the chair, her hand hit something very sharp and metallic, causing her to feel a sharp pain in her right ring finger.
According to Conyers’s lawsuit, the pain was strong enough for her to scream in pain and jump out of her seat. She says she suffered a severe cut on her hand, which caused her to lose the fingernail on her right ring finger. Immediately following the incident, she was tended to by police officers and paramedics, who treated her injury with alcohol pads and gauze. She was able to make her flight to Washington D.C. and sought further medical treatment when she arrived.
Conyers is suing seeking $25,000 in damages and has filed her lawsuit against Jamjomar, Inc., who owns the McDonald’s franchise location at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Jamjomar, Inc. owns 15 McDonald’s franchise locations in Michigan and Louisiana. Jamjomar, Inc. has not commented on the lawsuit and is primarily owned by former Detroit Lion Jim Thrower.
Conyers claims the injuries she has sustained are both severe and permanent and that they have caused her extreme pain and anguish. As a result of her injuries, Conyers says she no longer has full use of her right hand. Since the cut took off one of her fingernails, she also says her nail has not been able to grow back correctly and will continue to grow back improperly. She believes the chair might not have been assembled correctly and wasn’t properly inspected before being put into the restaurant area.
Monica Conyers’s time on the Detroit City Council earned her a great deal of notoriety in the Detroit area. She was voted onto the Detroit City Council in 2005 and served as president of the council from September 18,2008 through May 11, 2009. She made local headlines over her disputes with Kenneth Cockrel, Jr., most famously for an incident in April 2008 where she called Cockrel “Shrek.” In 2009, Conyers pleaded guilty to accepting a $6,000 bribe in exchange for her vote regarding a sludge-hauling contract. She resigned from the Detroit City Council shortly afterward and served her sentence at Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia. She was released in 2012 and has since landed a job working at a at a collision shop in Corktown.
