Playing Hardball with Allstate
Show Me The Money.
Attorney Scott Goodwin presents a check from Allstate Insurance for $185,000.00 to Loubertha Monroe's guardian, Minister Riley Harris.

Sometimes it takes a "David" to bring down a "Goliath."
That was the case when Goodwin & Scieszka fought a giant insurance company who refused to pay an 87-year-old woman who was injured in an auto accident.
Goodwin & Scieszka were retained by Minister Riley Harris, who was named as conservator of the estate of Ms. Loubertha Monroe. Our job was to prove a case for Ms. Monroe's pain and suffering against the negligent driver who injured her.
During the course of our representation, it became apparent that Allstate was not willing to pay fair and just compensation for the care and services provided to Ms. Monroe by Minister Harris and his wife.
Allstate Refuses to Pay Up
As a result of severe closed head injuries suffered in the auto accident in May 1996, neurosurgeons notified social services that Ms. Monroe was severely incapacitated and required 24-hour care and supervision. Although Ms. Monroe was under the constant care of Minister and Mrs. Harris, Allstate fought payment for these vital services.
Allstate conveniently ignored the overwhelming medical evidence that Ms. Monroe was in need of constant supervision – despite spending one month in the traumatic brain care unit at Harper Hospital! Upon her release, her doctors ordered her to have one-on-one 24-hour care, but Allstate still refused to pay.
At that point, attorney Scott Goodwin filed a lawsuit against Allstate Insurance for failure to pay personal injury protection benefits rightfully owed under Michigan's No-Fault law. Unfortunately, Allstate refused to respond to the lawsuit and the numerous requests to settle the claim.
As a result of their inaction, a Default was entered, testimony was heard, and a judgment against Allstate was awarded for $193,508.90.
Action Speaks Louder Than Words
When Allstate refused to respond to this legal verdict, Scott Goodwin obtained a writ of execution which allowed him to seize the property and assets of Allstate Insurance Company on behalf of his clients.
On June 18,1997, Scott Goodwin brought Minister Harris and Ms. Monroe to Allstate's Southfield Regional Claims office. Scott also brought Sheriff Chuck Heidi, several deputies, and a large moving van.
Just before the Sheriff's men began to dismantle and remove Allstate's computer system, Attorney Goodwin received a settlement check on-the-spot for $185,000.00.
In Good Hands?
In case after case, Allstate and other insurance giants deny victims of drunk and negligent drivers fair compensation for their injuries and damages. Claims adjustors and insurance attorneys continue to take the position that they simply won't pay voluntarily.
