Man, Woman and Infant Ejected from Horse and Buggy Car Crash Near Sturgis, Michigan
The family was from Shipshewana, Indiana and they were involved a horse and buggy accident that took place in Sturgis, Michigan.
Lavon Kepp, age 30, was driving the buggy. Him and the infant suffered only minor injuries as a result of the crash that occurred on Fawn Rd., west of South Centerville Road in Sturgis.
The woman has presumably suffered no injuries.
Nicholas Conner hit the buggy from behind with his Chrysler station wagon. Conner is 28 years old, and was issued a citation for driving carelessly. According to him, he did not see the horse and buggy before the accident.
According to police officers, alcohol and speeding are not factors in the accident.
This is certainly an interesting story. It’s not every day, at least in Michigan, that you cross paths with a horse and buggy. Maybe on Mackinac Island, but at least on the island you aren’t able to drive.
What is careless driving in Michigan?
According to the statute:
Sec. 626b. A person who operates a vehicle upon a highway or a frozen public lake, stream, or pond or other place open to the general public including an area designated for the parking of vehicles in a careless or negligent manner likely to endanger any person or property, but without wantonness or recklessness, is responsible for a civil infraction.
It’s falling below what the reasonably prudent driver would do in like circumstances. That’s careless driving in Michigan.
If you approach a horse and buggy from behind, in an effort to avoid more horse and buggy car crashes, then please:
- Slow down
- Pass far from the side of the horses in an effort not to spook them
- Remember, that the passengers are not wearing seatbelts
