Misshapen bicycle after being run over by vehicle

Rod VanDyke, a teacher at South Christian High School in Grand Rapids, MI, has died after his bicycle was hit by a car on the morning of October 7th. VanDyke was riding his bike to work and was riding southbound on 36th Ave. in Georgetown Township when his bicycle was hit from behind by a 1999 Acura just before 6:00 AM. 40-year-old John Alferink was driving the Acura and told police he couldn’t see VanDyke ahead of him because the headlights from a northbound vehicle made it difficult to see.

VanDyke was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where he later died. At the time of the accident, he was wearing dark clothing, but had lights on the front and rear of his bike and was wearing a helmet. VanDyke had worked at South Christian High School for over 20 years, teaching freshman and sophomore math and coaching the girls varsity golf team, and was extremely beloved by students and fellow teachers.
