You’re not imagining it – driving has become more dangerous since the pandemic. At least nearly half of Americans believe so. A significant number of people say drivers in their communities are less safe now compared to five years ago.
A recent Pew Research Center survey reveals that cellphone use behind the wheel tops the list of dangerous behaviors. The survey also found that one in four drivers regularly witness road rage incidents, particularly in urban areas.
Dangerous driving behaviors
Distracted and reckless driving behaviors are becoming alarmingly common in Michigan. Here are some of the key concerns highlighted by the survey:
- A staggering 78% of Americans see cellphone distraction as a significant problem. Distracted drivers can easily miss critical moments, leading to accidents.
- Sixty-three percent of respondents report speeding, tailgating and running red lights as significant problems, endangering everyone on the road.
- Drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs remain a major concern, with around half of Americans worried about drunk drivers and 37% about motorists high on marijuana.
- Forty-seven percent of people surveyed are concerned about drivers putting pedestrians and cyclists at risk. Lower-income areas often see higher rates of pedestrian accidents.
The report shows frequent commuters have more concerns about cellphone use than occasional drivers.
The impact of road rage
Road rage is another growing concern, with about 27% of Americans witnessing it fairly often. This behavior involves aggressive actions fueled by anger, creating hazardous situations for everyone involved.
Urban areas report the highest instances of road rage, with about a third of city residents seeing it frequently. Such behavior escalates tensions and increases the likelihood of accidents.
How can I hold negligent drivers accountable?
If an aggressive or careless driver injures you or damages your property, you have the right to seek compensation. Medical bills, lost wages and vehicle repairs can create significant financial strain. You shouldn’t have to shoulder these burdens alone when someone else’s behavior caused your injuries.
An experienced car accident lawyer can help protect your rights and handle communications with insurance companies, which typically try to reduce payouts. A skilled attorney can gather evidence, document your injuries and fight for fair compensation while you focus on recovery.
