Detroit’s Stray Dog Problem: Watch Out for Dog Bites!

Detroit has a laundry list of problems, and adding to that list are the thousands of stray dogs roaming the streets. People without jobs, forced to move out of their homes, who are fighting just to feed themselves were unable to care for their animals, and as a result they had to turn them loose.

It’s estimated that there are over 50,000 stray dogs wandering the streets.

Many of these animals are malnourished and haven’t been given all of their shots. A lot likely have rabies, which means that they’re more dangerous than ordinary house pets.

There was recently a systemized scavenger hunt to find and count the wild dogs because there are people contesting the amount of strays.

Regardless of the number, something needs to be done. It’s a huge liability having ownerless animals walking the streets. Legally speaking, if an ownerless dog bites you, then you have nowhere to turn to compensate you for your harms.
