A head on car accident on US-127 in East Lansing has killed two young women and injured one man. 18-year-old Nicole Ann Merschel of Mason, MI was driving a small sedan southbound on northbound US-127 near the I-496 interchange just before 2:00 AM on September 18th. Merschel’s car collided with a cargo van being driven by a 36-year-old man from Milwaukee. The driver of the cargo van was seriously injured and taken to Sparrow Hospital for treatment. Merschel was pronounced dead at the scene. 22-year-old Jessi Nunn, a passenger in Merschel’s car, was also taken to Sparrow Hospital for treatment, but later died on September 24th.

Investigators are still trying to determine how Merschel and Nunn ended up going the wrong way on US-127. It is unknown if alcohol played a factor; toxicology reports are expected within a few weeks. Captain Jeff Murphy of the East Lansing Police told WLNS, “In that key piece is what makes this either criminal or just an accident and we don’t want to speculate because that could’ve been the case or she could’ve been the designated driver that got confused and got on the highway for some reason.”

Where the accident occurred is a very common area for car accidents. US-127 near the on and off ramps for Trowbridge Road is the second most frequent spot for car accidents in the East Lansing area.
